Vietnam’s national stadium ordered to report on degradation in wake of costly renovation

The review order came after public backlash due to a goalpost malfunction and wind blowing the roofs off the dugouts in football teams’ technical areas during Vietnam’s friendly game with Borussia Dortmund at the stadium last month.

Many staff members of My Dinh also told local media that leaks are affecting many areas of the stadium, including the VIP lounge.

The My Dinh national sports complex, which houses My Dinh National Stadium, is located in Nam Tu Liem District and has a capacity of 40,192.

It has hosted many major football and athletics events.

It was also the main venue for the Southeast Asian Games in May this year after undergoing a VND408-billion (US$17.1 million) revamp.

The complex has defaulted on tax debt worth VND855 billion ($35.8 million), according to the Hanoi Tax Department.

A leader of the sports complex told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday that the management board is conducting a comprehensive review as per the order from the Vietnam Sports Administration.

Many people hope there will be no more incidents when the stadium hosts at least two games of the 2022 AFF Championship, set to take place in ten Southeast Asian host cities from December 20 to January 16, 2023.
