German President’s Visit to Temple of Literature in Hanoi

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife arrived in Hanoi on January 23 for a two-day state visit at the invitation of President Vo Van Thuong and his wife. During their visit, foreign guests had the opportunity to explore Vietnamese culture through a visit to the historic Temple of Literature, a site that showcases Vietnam’s traditional fondness for learning. The high-ranking German delegation received a briefing on the history of the Temple of Literature. This is Steinmeier’s second visit to Vietnam, following his first visit in October 2016 when he served as the Foreign Minister of Germany. This is the first foreign visit by the German President in 2022 and marks the first high-level exchange between the two countries this year. Vietnam President Welcomes German Counterpart with a Grand Ceremony

President Vo Van Thuong invites German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to step on the podium while military bands play the national anthems of both nations. Vietnam and Germany first established diplomatic relations in 1975. The two countries lifted ties to strategic partnership in 2011. Germany is Vietnam’s biggest trade partner in Europe, and more than 350 German businesses are operating in Vietnam. As of May 2023, Germany had 444 valid projects worth over US$2.36 billion, ranking fourth from a total of 24 European countries investing in Vietnam. The two leaders inspect the guard of honour. Thai culture preserved in Muong Tac

Muong Tac culture is a mixture of Thai and Muong ethnic minority cultures. The most prominent cultural features are the folk songs and dances of the Thai, the original inhabitants of the region. Amid rapid economic and social development, the Thai people of Muong Tac are working hard to preserve and promote their culture. In Muong Tac valley Thai people gather every night to sing and dance. Some are members of the Art Club of the Elderly, who share an ardent love and enthusiasm for their traditional arts. Bac Cam Ton, head of Quang Huy commune’s Art Club of the Elderly, shared, “The Club was established in 2014 with 60 members. Many other communes have come here to study our model. Ngoc Chau wins swimsuit cape vote at Miss Universe 2022

The prize was recently announced on the page of the Miss Universe beauty contest following the grand final held on January 15 in the United States. Ngoc Chau initially departed for the international competition on December 26, 2022, and put in a series of strong performances at the contest. Most notably, her sledge mat national costume at the 71st Miss Universe was selected among the Top 10 by prestigious beauty pageant website Missosology. During the grand final, Chau suffered elimination from prior to the Top 16 round, marking the first time a Vietnamese representative has failed to make the later stages of the competition. In previous versions of the competition, H’Hen Nie, a Top 5 finisher in 2018, Hoang Thuy, Top 20 in 2019, Khanh Van, Top 21 in 2020, and Kim Duyen, Top 16 in 2021, had all represented Vietnam at the event. Hanoi's oldest Tet market bustling all day and night

People in the capital head to the market to buy big, beautiful, and green dong leaves to pack their Chung cakes to enjoy a traditional New Year. Having 10 years of experience selling dong leaves at Tran Quy Cap market, local trader Le Thu Van says during the Tet holiday this year, every day she imports more than 100,000 dong leaves to sell to customers.   Dong leaves at the market are imported from various places, including from the provinces of Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Thanh Oai in Hanoi, and Phu Ly in Ha Nam. According to small traders, this year a pack of 100 leaves are priced at between VND100,000 and VND150,000 To choose the right dong leaves, many customers spend between 20 and 30 minutes selecting the ones they want. Dong leaves are an indispensable ingredient in wrapping Chung cakes during the traditional Tet holiday in Vietnam. Israel – Vietnam Friendship Association Established

Photo: VNA The Israel – Vietnam Friendship Association has been established with a view to increasing people diplomacy between the two countries, VNA reported Monday. The establishment ceremony was held at the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s headquarters on January 22, one of the activities ahead of the 30th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties this year. The association gathers generations of Israeli ambassadors, deputy ambassadors, and diplomats who used to work in Vietnam over the last 20 years. Some of them have retired or moved to the private sector but still maintain their special sentiment towards the Southeast Asian nation.
