Exhibition spotlights Buddhism in Vietnam

The objects and photos on display reflect Buddhist thought, philosophy and spirit, and honour individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) since its inception in November 1981. 
 
Notably, they feature Buddhist popularisation in remote, border and island areas, including the nine islands in Truong Sa (Spartly), along with international cooperation in promoting Vietnam’s Buddhism to the world.
 
This is the first-ever exhibition that introduces all dignitaries of the Patronage Council, the Executive Council and other units of the VBS since the council was founded, as well as 13 departments and 63 provincial chapters of the council, according to Most Venerable Thich Tho Lac, head of the VBS’s cultural department.
 
Nearly 1,100 delegates from across the country will attend the ninth National Buddhist Congress, scheduled for November 28-29 in Hanoi.
 
During the congress, participants will review Buddhist activities over the past five years and sketch out tasks for the VBS in the next five years.

One of the important contents of the congress is adjusting the VBS Charter.
 
Participants will discuss the implementation of 12 targets and programmes, focusing on fostering Buddhist rules in line with the implementation of responsibilities of Buddhist dignitaries and followers.
 
The congress will seek to enhance solidarity and develop the VBS in the international arena.
 
Over the past five years, despite many difficulties, especially those caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the VBS has shown strong performance in completing its targets.
 
Notably, the Sangha successfully hosted the UN Vesak Day in 2019, which drew more than 5,000 delegates from 112 countries and territories. The ceremony commemorating the 40th founding anniversary of the VBS was held in 2021 online.
 
Earlier, provincial Buddhist congresses were held in all 63 localities nationwide.

Hanoi sees light traffic congestion on the first working day after Tet

Vehicles can easily move on usually-busy two-way streets. Compared to normal days, the traffic moving towards the capital’s gateways is heavy, although there is no signs of severe congestion. A long line of vehicles waits at a green light on Nguyen Trai street. A traffic police officer arrives early on Trieu Khuc street in order to guide the flow of traffic. The Nguyen Xien-Nguyen Trai intersection is slightly crowded, with vehicles able to move at a slow pace. Vehicles only clog up the area as cars and motorbikes wait for the light to turn green. During rush hour this morning, the majority of vehicles move at a snail’s pace on Nguyen Trai street. The same situation can be seen on Truong Chinh street. Da Nang and Yokohama Increase Collaboration in Environmental Preservation

A training course on solid waste management was held in Yokohama, Japan on September 4th. The course was attended by representatives from local units and authorities in Da Nang, who are implementing waste sorting and 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) programs. This initiative is part of a project sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and implemented in collaboration with the Japanese Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). The successful first stage of the project took place five years ago, with the support of these organizations, resulting in the implementation of waste sorting models in the community of Hai Chau and Thanh Khe districts.
